I wasn't really anticipating The Maze Runner. It looked like another run-of-the-mill teen book adaptations with mediocre trailers. I did have a glimmer of hope though, because of the cast and because I've heard that the book is incredible! Well, I'm glad to say that The Maze Runner is a very entertaining and interesting movie that surpasses most teenage book adaptations! The story follows Thomas, a boy who finds himself stranded with a bunch of other guys on a small area in the middle of an always changing maze. He and some others must find a way out of the maze before it is too late. I really love movies involving mazes and labyrinths. I really enjoy the adventure aspect of navigating a maze and solving puzzles; so this movie was a real treat. The story is actually super interesting and keeps a steady pace throughout the whole movie. I did read the book a long time ago, and from what I remember this movie was pretty faithful. The ending sets the audience up for a sequel, which I will be anticipating in the future. This unfortunately does boast problems, though. Way too many questions are left unanswered and the ending leaves you with way too many questions. Hopefully, there will be a sequel to explain it all. The cast is mostly great. Will Poulter and Thomas Brodie did excellent jobs, and so did the rest of the supporting cast. My problem here was the main actor, Dylan O'Brian. He gave a mostly bland, dry and boring performance that really underwhelmed. He just didn't work at all for his role. The direction from first time director Wes Ball was actually very good, except for some problems such as way too much shaky-cam and bizarre shots. The musical score, cinematography and editing are all top-notch and work very well. Overall The Maze Runner is a very entertaining and interesting movie that is a faithful adaptation to the book. Even with its numerous problems, they are overlooked by the great cast and the awesome pace. RATING: 7/10.
