    The Monuments Men

While film is my number one passion, I also have a basic understanding of Renaissance and Modern art, and an appreciation of its beauty and style. I believe that this influenced my appreciation of The Monuments Men. While you do not need an understanding of art history to enjoy this film, those who have a passion for these classic, historic pieces of artwork should not miss this movie. The performances given by the actors are all outstanding, with "A" list talent like George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray, John Goodman, and Cate Blanchett all giving great performances. One particular scene featuring Bill Murray was show stealing, and if you've seen the movie, you'll know what scene I'm talking about. The true story this movie follows is quite intriguing; a bunch of art experts, none of whom are soldiers, are recruited and head to Europe during final months of World War II to rescue stolen art. There are questions raised in the movie that are worth thinking about after the credits roll, such as "Is it worth risking multiple human lives to save pieces of art? ". There are scenes and images that challenge the viewer to contemplate the sacrifices, injustices and atrocities of war, and how art as a reflection of culture is also a victim of war. Even though this film has many great things to offer, there were some parts that could be improved. For example, there are times where the story focuses on what these men are doing, without an explanation of why they are doing it. Another problem I had with this film is that some scenes seemed forced together without a flow that was consistent; following the story of one character then jumping to another character, and another. There are times where the movie returns to the story of a certain character, and you have no idea what they were previously doing as the movie seemed to have forgotten them for the past half hour. Despite these small flaws, I really enjoyed The Monuments Men. It was quite funny at times, well acted, and I would like to emphasize that it was still exciting, despite having little to no action/violence that many war films have. I recommend The Monuments Men, particularly to adults, and those who have an interest in art, or the history of World War II. This film is worth your investment of time and money.
