    The Revenant

The Revenant is as gripping a piece of cinema as you are likely to experience this year, (technically last year), hell ANY year. Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu follows up his brilliant Oscar-winning directorial job on Birdman with an even more impressive effort here. Although some wild and none too flattering stories have been told by some crew members about the director's perfectionism, and "obsessiveness" over the year-long shoot, one cannot argue with the breathtaking results. The film is full of sumptuous and jaw-dropping visuals, and one of the most expert examples of staging and framing of a battle sequence in long take that I've ever seen. It also features a performance from Leonardo DiCaprio that is unlike anything he's ever done before. To analyze it in traditional terms is pointless. It's a performance that is comprised mostly of cries of pain and anguish, rather than spoken dialogue. It is as gruelling and realistic a portrayal as anything I've bore witness to on the silver screen before. "Incomparable" seems like the appropriate word to use when discussing his performance, or pretty much every aspect of this film quite frankly. There will of course be those pedantic few who complain that the narrative is basically non-existent, a flimsy Man vs. The Elements revenge tale, with very little of substance at it's core. To hell with those people. No, the script isn't Shakespeare, but in terms of pure, adrenaline-fueled excitement, technical proficiency, and directorial excellence, The Revenant is without a doubt, the best movie of 2015.
