Some poignant moments and exhilarating dance scenes elevate this film into the upper stratosphere. Judi Dench and Maggie Smith were a delight and a marvel to watch when acting together. I agree with the reviewer who said that Sunni is annoying but he redeems himself nicely at the end. It is important to remember that he is young and lacks the life experience of his elders. The supporting cast, particularly the taxi driver, were valuable to the movie's appeal. The infidelity of one character was handled with realism and it was quite effective, but the resolution with her spouse was too pat. There were many irritating characters like Bill Nighy's wife and the rival hotelier, but even more likeable ones, like Sunni's mother and fiancée. David Strathairm was customarily excellent as the major American investor.
The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel suggests that tradition and cultural values are a great defence against cynicism and other ills, and a balm in our later years. Generally speaking, a light-hearted yet serious movie that contains a lot of wisdom. You might want to see it with a pen and paper to catch so many of the bon mots.
If you like white haired dudes you will love this picture. Does anyone else think Richard Gere is starting to resemble Alex Trebek?
