Decadence and great fun: this 3 hour extravaganza on Roman night life are the first thing that pop into everybody's mind when they hear the title: LA DOLCE VITA. But Fellini was not exactly extolling the virtues of such lives richly told in this magnificent B & W cinematography. Everyone thinks it's such a classic and it is... but not for its remarkable film making but more for exposing the prurient aspect of this parasitic type of life. Marcello Mastroiani, long a Fellini staple stars, and Anita Ekberg became a sensation as the poster girl for the film. I disagree very strongly with all who have posted as to what a spectacle this film happens to be. It was only the sensation of that early sixties moment. The film is not great by any stretch of the imagination. It has achieved this level of greatness from all the talk and gossip on a film that was hyped to death. Even Fellini would admit that this was hardly a great film. His masterpieces would all come after the mediocrity which is La Dolce Vita, the exact term Fellini would have used if pressed to describe the film in one word. This film has been over-praised for too long a time. It's o. k. but just o. k., nothing more.
