    The Theory of Everything

Every now and then, a special movie comes along that makes me cry. Though I do get emotional during films, I rarely ever even tear up. The only movie I recall crying in was Schindler's List. However, I am completely cool with telling you guys that The Theory of Everything made me cry, and it's a beautiful film.

The true story follows Stephen Hawking's life and his love life with Jane Hawking. I didn't know much about Hawking's life going in to this film, so I was excited to learn about the life of one of the most brilliant people alive today. I thought the story was lovely, heartbreaking and always interesting. The love story was very realistic and heartwarming. It wasn't treated in a cheesy or over the top fashion, though. The parts of the movie where Stephen is battling ALS are so sad and occasionally hard to watch. Some events also, as I stated before, made me cry.

Eddie Redmayne gives what is tied for my favourite performance of this year (Jake Gyllenhaal is tied with him) He is absolutely flawless as Hawking, especially during the parts where ALS is slowly taking him over. I cannot praise this actor enough for his fabulous performance. Felicity Jones also gives an amazing performance as Jane Hawking. She is also a very strong role model for young girls. The rest of the supporting cast were good, but forgettable.

James Marsh directs this movie so beautifully. He uses unique flashback sequences and great camera angles to make the audience feel a certain way, and it works! The film was very well edited, light and has a musical score that might be one of the best of the year! The writing in this movie is also very realistic.

Unfortunately, there is one major flaw in The Theory of Everything that keeps it from being a perfect film. The pacing is occasionally painfully slow. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy slow movies if they aren't boring, but The Theory of Everything does get boring after a while. I stopped paying attention sometimes because I was so bored. Even though the pace picked up at the end, at least 15 minutes of this movie could have been cut out to make the pace tighter.

Overall, The Theory of Everything is a heartbreaking and beautiful story with great direction, a fantastic musical score and some of the best acting I've seen in a long time. Even though the pace is sometimes painfully slow, this film is definitely worth checking out!

    RATING: 9/10.
