    The Thin Man

The first in the series of Thin Man films was from 1934's 'The Thin Man' with the awesome duo of William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles. It was such a smash hit in 1934 that it was the hands on favourite to win the Oscar as best film of the year until 'It Happened One Night', slow in popularity on its release, rapidly caught fire by word of mouth and swept all five major Oscars for 1934 films.

This fact takes nothing away from the brilliance of 'The Thin Man' which holds up to this day (2016) for a whole slew of reasons. The screenplay from Dashiell Hammett's novel is witty and fun with dialogue that created a whole new way of delivery that was fresh and bubbly. The performances of Powell and Loy as the sleuth husband and wife team captured a realism that was truly spot on, Powell receiving an Oscar Nomination for Best Actor, Loy, most unfairly being left out in the cold. The detective mystery moves at a brisk pace and forces one to carefully follow along for fear of missing something both delightful and very smart. The doggy of the series, Asta, becomes very much an integral part of this delicious mystery, a truly very smart addition to an already sparkling movie. One cannot discuss 'The Thin Man' without mentioning the brilliant direction of 'Woody' Van Dyke whose quick but laid back direction was a total boon both to the principal stars and the entire ensemble of supporting players. He created an ambiance which to this day is astonishing. Several Thin Man films followed the original and they were always delicious hits with both critics and public alike.
