    The Tribe

Utterly unique in conception, The Tribe is definitely not for the faint-of-heart. In spite of the lack of dialogue the story arc can be followed, however, the full experience could only be appreciated-of course-by those familiar with Ukrainian sign language. Usually, deaf people are presented as helpless and are to be pitied and cheered on in their efforts to become fully functioning people and shown in relation to their non-handicapped characters as in Children of a Lesser God. Here, the cast are all hearing impaired and thus emerge as individuals in their own right. Despite outbursts of violence, the movie is strangely exhilarating. The film may well be an allegory for the Ukrainian people's struggle for survival in a country which, in essence, has been ignored by the rest of the world. All those interested in the rare and unusual in cinema ought to see this once.
