The Wind That Shakes the Barley

This is a well done movie with some great performances especially by the actress who portrays Sinead. Brothers Teddy and Damien were also very good. This is not a movie for the faint hearted but then again it is a war story and therefore full of violence as is war. It is actually a story of two wars; one with the British and secondly the Civil War that followed the acceptance of the negotiated Anglo- Irish treaty. I thought the movie could have been better balanced between the two. The latter was almost an afterthought even though it dealt with the most interesting theme of brother against brother. Completely missing was the conclusion of these historical events, mainly that the pro- treaty side eventually prevailed and the complete separation of Ireland from Britain was achieved constitionally without war. In the words of Michael Collins," the treaty gave Ireland the freedom to be free" and in the end brother did not have to take up arms against brother in a bloody Civil War. Too bad this aspect was not included in the movie. But then perhaps it is an aspect the Irish would sooner forget.

Perhaps you should read a history book... The civil certainly did happen and it certainly was bloody!
