    Thor

With a solid cast, excellent art direction and its own identity, Marvel has done the seemingly impossible. “Thor” fits comfortably next to “Iron Man” and “The Incredible Hulk” while also smoothly paving the way towards “The Avengers”.

In the realm of Asgard, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is the brash, arrogant heir to King Odin’s throne. After being manipulated into reigniting a dormant war with the frost giants, Thor is stripped of his powers and banished to Earth where he learns a lesson in humility with the help of astrophysicist Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) Meanwhile, his brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) makes a move for the crown.

For me, Thor has always been a weird piece of the Marvel Universe. Introducing him means acknowledging ancient myths… and this ignites a volley of strange questions. “Thor” handles this predicament well. The material is taken seriously so you do too. This is a superhero film, but it's played as a Shakespearean costume drama, with grandiose vistas, an arrogant prince, warring kingdoms, political scheming and brothers trying to live up to their father’s legacy while forging their own. Director Kenneth Branaugh acknowledges how silly the magic hammer, rainbow bridge and wild concepts could've been by sprinkling some humor throughout, but you’re not laughing AT Thor, you’re laughing WITH it.

What could've been improved are the action scenes. They’re fine but aren't flashy or confidently helmed in the same way that the story and characters are. Thor’s entertaining as he learns what is required of a king, and the romance that unfolds between him and Jane is also compelling. Sometimes I find that flawed characters who learn a lesson tend to get less interesting as the story progresses, but that’s where Loki comes in. Thor’s archnemesis is fully developed, compelling and believable. Some of the other side characters (there are many on Asgard and on Earth) have small parts, but characters like the gate guardian Heimdall (Idris Elba) and Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgård) still manage to make an impact. This is a terrific cast that was perfectly selected. One look at Anthony Hopkins as Odin, and it feels right.

“Thor” could've been just another one of those stories where a hero from another world is transported to ours and you count down the minutes until he returns to his world but there’s a good balance and again, the characters and their drama makes it all flow by so quickly that the nearly 2-hour running time flies by like THAT!

“Thor” is a solid foundation upon which more can be built. It’s a splendid-looking movie that builds its own mythology and balances the theatrics with some action and humor as well. You’ll be excited to see more, particularly after the end-credit teaser. (On Blu-ray, November 11, 2017)
