Full disclosure - I was dragged to this film and I had absolutely no interest in seeing it although I do like Naomi Watts and Ben Stiller. The film was one pleasant surprise after another. From seeing the advertisements and trailer I "assumed" it was a comedy, but it was more of a middle-age angst, OMG what have I done, is it too late to get back on track, the grass is always greener, why does my father-in law hate me, how can no one see me for what I am, I am stuck in a rut, why does no one appreciate what I am trying to say/create, American indie film. Surprising performances by Adam Driver, Amanda Sigfried and Charles Grodin. It had much deeper themes just under the surface: a woman's reproductive challenges, a long-term marriage that survived a miscarriage, peer pressure, societal norms, old vs. new friends, ageing in a (North American) culture which only appreciates youth, jealousy/envy, the road not taken, envy, ambition, getting lost in one's one life / what you think was/is your path, etc.
I left the theatre thinking everyone in the cast was going to be okay, driven by their own egos, and maybe I will be too.
