JK Simmons has been my choice for 'most underrated' since the first Spiderman film. Here he gets his opportunity at the top of the marque, and gives a quality performance. Co-star Miles Teller, raw hands and all, is utterly believable as the young man with the drum sticks. My complaints rest strictly in the misuse of historical fact and the reality stretch where Simmons' character appears to jeopardize what's left of his reputation in an attempt to exact revenge while in front of a Lincoln Centre audience. However Ellington's classic 'Caravan', adapted by many moviemakers as the go-to music for exotic dancing, and the marvelous editing make this an upper rung film.
