This is a small film with a couple of big roles. I was put in mind of "An Officer and a Gentleman, and a couple of my Phys Ed teachers. The core performances are very strong. Notable is J. K. Simmons' "tirade on the verge" percolation. Miles Teller is able also, and puts me in mind of a young John Cusak. For me that's praise. Neither main character is really easy to sympathize with, but most of us have been downhill of a zealot in faculty. The trailers indicated promise, and it's certainly one of the more memorable efforts of late. The film maker should be allowed to make more films, and needs to work the craft a bit. Whiplash, is worthy of audience. Percussion fans will be pleased, percussionists divided.
