    Wild is the Wind

George Cukor did amazing work directing this fascinating drama of a man who remarries a second time, the second time with the sister of his dead wife. That is only the beginning of the woes, Some men simply can't forget the memories of the first wife and so it appears here. Neglected and often confused by Anthony Quinn with the first wife, Anna Magnani eventually winds up in the arms of a much younger man. This is drama Eugene O'Neil style. It's heavy, very serious with very few light touches and a musical break in Italian to ease the tragedy of the entire situation. Anthony Quinn and Anna Magnani won Best Actor/Actress Nominations while Anthony Franciosa was nominated in 1957, the year of Wild is the Wind, as Best actor for A Hatful of Rain. Miss Magnani gives an absolutely glorious performance. She would have been my choice as the Oscar winner of 1957, having already won in 1955 for The Rose Tattoo.
