I thought it was entertaining, the script was good but is boring at some points, overall good film.

Great movie. Very thrilling. I quite enjoyed it. There just wasn't anything that kept me wanting more. If there was, I would give it 10/10.
| 8/10 | sollymander24@ - 66 reviews 2.4.2013 - age: 1-12 |
Not usually my type of movie but ended up watching it based mostly on the high rating. Quite entertaining and visually appealing (but didn't watch it in 3D) This is a cute story of a street kid who can fix most anything and the effect he has on people around him. Also is a wonderful homage to early movie-making.

Scorcese has done it again! But this time, his masterpiece didn't get Best Picture, but it got a whole lot of other awards!
| 10/10 | chwebb1@ - 259 reviews 19.1.2013 - age: 1-12 |
The only reason this was made was to get our money. The 3D was pointless the storyline was pointless and it all was very boring.
| 1/10 | jen_skully90@ - 35 reviews 31.5.2012 - age: 26-35 |
A good one to watch with family. A bit too long of the beginning to unfold why the filmmaker stop making film.
| 8/10 | jgluo@ - 32 reviews 4.5.2012 - age: 36-49 |
I thought 'Martin Scorcese' wow, surely will be good stuff. Considering all the hype about this movie I was keenly disappointed. This would have been a passable computer animated movie.
| 5/10 | wondering.spirit@ - 11 reviews 4.5.2012 - age: 50+ |
Wow! Even if you aren't interested in the story see it for the visual. Simply amazing! That being said the story was great, too. Stayed as close to the book as I think it possibly could have, while making an all-around entertaining movie!
| 9/10 | pam@ - 17 reviews 3.5.2012 - age: 18-25 |
I understand why it won a lot of prizes. It's a very nice movie that reach all groups of people.
| 7/10 | anonyme@ - 2 reviews 30.4.2012 - age: 13-17 |
A film within a film. Visually inspiring. A true story about a pioneer in filmmaking entangled with a young urchin and his destiny as the true inheritor of his father's genius denied to him by circumstances. The weaving of the fulfillment when both their destinies collide and truth is found. Loved it...

I enjoyed the movie "Hugo" on the BIG SCREEN. Beautiful cinematography. Went with a friend, 50+, she LOVED the movie "Hugo". It's a movie for all ages, not just for kids.
| 8/10 | wschow@ - 10 reviews 18.4.2012 - age: 50+ |
I thought this was cute but not exactly as advertised. Although I do like fantasy (I love Tim Burton for it), I found it really far-fetched.
| 6/10 | lucie_160@ - 38 reviews 10.4.2012 - age: 50+ |
I really enjoyed the movie. Was not expecting too much from the movie... but turned out to b a real "what next" movie. Enjoyed every moment of the movie. A must see.

The story was enchanting, the acting was wonderful, and the artistry can't be matched. An exquisite film.

I found Hugo to be a very boring film that wasted my time. The 3D was pointless.
| 1/10 | erick_87_542@ - 102 reviews 5.4.2012 - age: 18-25 |
Excellent story but hard to class as either a young persons movie or an adult movie. Definitely worth seeing.
| 7/10 | elleywood@ - first review 1.4.2012 - age: 50+ |
I thought the story was sweet but was secondary to just how beautiful it was to watch this movie. I was mesmerized by every scene.
| 8/10 | fitzzzeee@ - first review 29.3.2012 - age: 50+ |
I took my children ages 7, 10 and 12 to this movie. They enjoyed it for the visual effects. The multi layers of scenery in 3-D were beautifully and masterfully done. Better than any movie I've ever seen. The story line was unique and very insightful. A young, spirited street boy who is a genius at fixing things stretches himself out of his solitaire to reach out to a grumpy old and his family. The subplots of romantic developments between other couples in the film add interesting addtional drama and I loved how all the plots blended into another. Do yourself a favour and see this film.
| 10/10 | brenda.gilstorf@ - 15 reviews 27.3.2012 - age: 36-49 |
Apart from the stunning visuals, this movie is horrible. The storyline is convoluted yet predictable. Could have been done without 3D. People who liked Tree of Life will probably like this movie because you will get bored if interested in character development and a moving plot.

Very beautiful love letter to the beginnings of cinema - which everyone must see. May be a bit slow at times for adults, but always very beautiful to look at. Highly recommended.

Very well made... amazing actors... good story... very entertaining, and worth seeing.
| 8/10 | ac53083@ - 53 reviews 14.3.2012 - age: 36-49 |
The costumes, camera angles, and seamless shots that followed characters throughout certain scenes of the movie were bang on. The plot was a little slow for my taste. In comparison to movie like Amelie, which was visual stelar, character driven, without special effects, slow moving plot and sub titled.

It was awesome, high graphics, everthing that you would want in an excellent movie, I rate this 10.

Kudos to Scorsese, the entire cast and all those unique contributors for this magical, fantasy-like tale which deservedly won five Oscars. It conveyed a spirited story filled with all the emotions entailed in human connections. What makes this movie unique is in part the mystery of the orphan boy secretly living in the walls of the Paris train station set to the backdrop of the 1920's. The setting is nostalgic, with beautiful visuals depicting the relationships between an interesting group of characters; all of who provide joy, sadness, humour, friendship, love, loss and redemption. The other amazing part of this story is the reality of a true story that is intertwined and mysteriously unfolds from the magic of one story to the magic of a silent film producer's story, a pioneer of his time. That too was an unexpected twist wrought with more emotion and magic. I cried of joy and sadness in this movie as it had a different tone from most pieces today and in comparison to Scorcese's other films. It was masterful in cinematography, a heartfelt, endearing story which weaves into other fascinating stories, and every set was beautifully illustrated. This movie was great for the whole family and hopefully there is a sequel to answer some questions which are not readily answered.

One of the best movies I have seen in a long while. Very well done, captivating, good screenplay and acting. It was the first time when I saw people clapping their hands at the end of the movie!

This is a totally different work of art from Scorsese, skillfully combining fantasy and reality. Definitely worth watching...

I really liked this movie. It's POSSIBLY destined for greatness but I doubt it. I'd say it's an excellent movie and a must-see but I don't think you HAVE to see it in 3-D which I think has been overhyped. Lots of imagination in this movie which I think will make for a great family viewing. It's funny in a way that this has been categorized as "fantasy" because it's BARELY fantasy. It feels so real that you don't really ever think that any of this couldn't happen in the modern world. Perhaps that's the biggest accomplishment of all in this movie, total success at suspension of disbelief. Certainly one of 2011's best films. Probably 5th best or so. Again, the 3D in this film (in my opinion) has been grossly overrated. I sincerely hope that we do away with that entire 3D thing and soon. Don't want to end on that note though, this is a brilliant film through and through. Very enjoyable all around.

Hi, If you like to see expert film photography, this is the movie to see. The tale is excellently brought together by the actors and director. I was really surprised by it. Then again, look who directed it. All in all, this is not a time-waster of a movie.

I was actually disappointed with this show. I understand what it was trying to get at but come on really! Although it was richly done and etc. but I guess it was made for certain people to recapture a little something they had lost, if you now what I mean. Glad I rented it instead.

I just had to see what all the Academy Awards buzz was about, still don't really have much of a clue. The 3-D effects were good not great, the music was wonderful but the movie as a whole moves at a snails pace. The critics would have you believe the film is a classic, it's not... at all, but it is worth seeing.
| 7/10 | elmontsparks@ - 105 reviews 28.2.2012 - age: 50+ |
I have not read the book nor had I previously heard of anything about the movie in terms of a synopsis. The movie moved at a perfect pace, the characters were very believable in their respective story lines and the picture itself was very detailed but not overwhelming. I loved Hugo as a character as well as the actor portraying Hugo. The boy was very resourceful in the ways he had to provide for himself but at the same time still had the innocence of a boy his age should have. Very well done... it will find its way into my DVD collection for sure!

Loved this movie. Sure it is different than most of the garbage produced these days, but that makes it refreshing. The historical storyline was quite unusual, but enjoyable. Even though it was 2 hours long, it didn't drag for me because there was a lot of variety and action. The young actors were amazing... so sweet and very talented. I liked the setting and the Parisian flare... not overly done... nice to see the Eiffel tower! Family friendly... no swearing or gutter talk or suggestive scenes. If you like that kind of thing, this movie likely won't appeal to you.

A superb movie. Unfortunately, I was not able to see it in 3D, which, having now seen it, I can see was a real mistake. There are many scenes, especially inside the clocks, which would obviously have been better if seen in 3D. This is not about movie solely about the special effects. It has a great storyline, with great acting. Go see it while you can in the theatre with 3D. It won't be the same on TV.
