A pleasure to watch, yet sad, but hopeful.

This movie was incredibly intense, definitely not for the faint of heart. There were two scenes that were particularly disturbing. The first one was so hard to watch that it made me sick to the stomach, and the second one I literally had to cover my eyes. The fact that this story is based on real events makes it even more disturbing. This movie was beautifully shot and the acting was amazing, especially by Ni Ni. The ending is very heartbreaking, the audience is left with their imagination to figure out what will happen to the women, which makes the movie's message even more powerful in my opinion.

Really great movie and a must see. The acting was awesome. I really felt sorry for George at the end. It shows that there are true heros in this world.

The really heart breaking thing is that the Japanese wouldn't acknowledge or REFUSE TO ACKNOWLEDGE the massacre really took place in Nanking! The Japanese still says that it was a military fight between the two troupes! But the Nanking and Tokyo War Tribunals proved that a conservative estimate of 300,000 Chinese were killed (or slaughtered) by the Japanese soldiers within 2 months after Nanking was fallen to the hands of the Japanese soldiers in 1937! Due to the internal fights between the Communists and the Nationalists, the Japanese have NEVER paid a dime as war compensation to the Chinese! When I was a child, my aunt and other old ladies always scared me by saying: if you don't behave, the Jap will come and take you away... What a chilling way to discipline me when I was only 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7... ! History is what it happened, not what the Japanese want to learn in class or what the communists want to instill into its museums...

I like to learn about history via movies and was so touched by this movie. The realness of this period in history was definitely felt and I am so grateful for what I have learned. I cried for about 80% of the film, and will be buying it when it comes out. Definitely one of those movies to be valued.

It reminds that my father was once in a church school at that time during WWII. He still can sing those beautiful songs.

I am only giving a nine because I find it too sad and depressing! But it is definitely a very good movie! If you don't see the point of watching people suffer on a big screen don't go :)

This movie is very difficult to watch because of the terrible violence but war is not fun or easy. This movie really makes you think about courage, the useless killing and how war changes everyone involved. The acting is excellent. The story is worth telling especially if the story is from a real account.

As a woman, watching this film can get a little hard to bear at times. Beautiful cinematography, great story line, strong acting especially by Christian Bale and Ni Ni. Can be very graphic at times, but I understand the necessity, for it's a war movie after all, showing people at their worst. Even if the events in this film are still been disputed by both sides, it will no doubt shine light on one of the forgotten battles of WWII.

A beautiful story, sad but very powerful and inspiring. Very violent; it shows how people turn into monsters during war. War changes everybody's life forever. Christian Bale is amazing as always. A must see.

Good film! Real history. Accepting with courage the true history is to avoid the war in the future. We love the peace.

A very intense, dramatic film. Some of the atrocities scenes were tough to view but sadly, it's the reality of brutal wars that occurred in history as well as the present. Bring some tissues when seeing this film.

A very fine movie involving the historical invasion of Nanking by the Japanesem, and their brutalization of the Chinese women. Also a story about how war changes people, often profoundly. The acting, story, cinematography, and music are all very, very good. A movie well worth seeing.

A well made film, and the drama mounts as it should. I could have wished a bit less less lingering over the gore. It would not have reduced the human tragedy. I was having difficulty believing in Christian Bale, but he handles the part well from the middle of the film.

This is a good movie with quite good character development. You are able to empathize with the lead and supporting characters. It has very strong content so is not for the faint of heart. If you have any interest in history and the WWII it is a must see movie. Just be forewarned there are graphic scenes of inhuman behavior.

This movie seems a real story. There are similar stories from the survivors of NanJin massacre. We all need to remember the history. We all need to know Japanese are those who will invade China and attack U. S. A again in the future. [...]

Perfect! It will become the best movie ever directed by Zhang Yimou! Really great! The admission was charged at $200 Yuan (about $30 Canadian) at the premier, but it was worth every penny of the admission. I want to see it again when it is out on December 16. Thanks Zhang!
