I guess it's an artsy (somewhat violent) film, which is not my type. After 40 minutes I had to stop, because nothing of worth happened. I didn't care about the story or the characters.

Wow this movie didn't really go anywhere did it!!! Glad I rented it but would have been much happier if I just caught it on cable instead.

Well acted by Woody for sure but the drama is drawn out too long, the ending leaves a bitter taste in your mouth and well you wonder was it worth it! I'd skip. 6/10 for Woody's performance.

Really did not enjoy it. The characters were unbelievable. The story was boring and cliched for the most part. Harrelson is a caricature of a bad cop. I'd skip it.

Woody Harrelson's performance is a career-best; it now places him in the exalted company of Robert Deniro and Jack Nicholson. This unappealing brute of a police officer still contains a deeply buried humanity as presented by the incredible scripting of James Elroy and Oren Moverman. Harrelson's Dave Brown makes Harvey Kietel's Bad Lieutenant look like a campfire girl. He's not only a racist but he hates everyone equally. This is the story of one man's relentless downward spiral whose misanthropy and psychopathy is completely absorbing. This film is not for everyone but it is one of the finest character studies of a doomed cop. The saga of Daterape Dave (so-called for his murder of a serial rapist) is not a date-night experience.

Only saw it because of movie critic Roger Ebert's 4 Star rating of it ( I have never been a fan of Woody Harrelson) That being said I would have to say that this is great movie in every regard - the best bad cop movie since Training Day.

Though the actors work very hard and give believable performances & Woody Harrelson is outstanding, there is only so much you can do with a plot this bad and a director who is inept. Mumbled lines, bad shots, a botched plot, Serpico it ain't. Even worse than To Live and Die in L. A. which had some stunning photo work. So dystopian in its' vision and so badly handled. Go back to film school and study Blade Runner. We don't doubt that L. A. is quickly turning into the U. S. equivalent of a third world city, with extremely poor and extremely rich and nothing in between, but there are more interesting ways to tell this story.

I was waiting for this movie, when I saw the preview, but I was disappointed cause this movie could have been a lot better. It's slow, sometimes boring, too long. Woody Harrelson did a good job acting as always. I mean there are lots of good actors in this movie, like Ben Foster, Robin Wright, Sigourney Weaver, Anne Heche, that's why people will expect a lot more.

Hated it. Slow, sloppy, choppy, pointless dribble. This movie would have to be in reverse to get any slower. It's a very bad movie about a bad cop. The photography sucks and recording is so bad in places you don't hear what is said. Hated it. There is no real plot or ending and the movie jumps all over the place. Once again Katherine Monk proves to me she should be selling used cars not reviewing movies. Hated it. Oh, by the way did I say... HATED IT.
