I was born in china, and raised there. Read the book, my parents were the teacher of Central Ballet of Beijing, i.e. the school he went. He was just a student, not even an employee, no way for Mao's wife to see his show. This is made up by himself. He did stayed in Houston after the exchange finishes. And the story of vice president and Dengxiaoping involved in this, this is another madeup. Nobody knows him, actually in China, even in states, there were quiet a few big stars stayed in states before him, they were real stars, he put the story of these a few people on himself. Anyway, americans like the story, and spend money to see it.

Very emotional, especially the part where the parents walk onto the stage. Before that, his biggest fear was whether his parents were still alive. With his natural talent and years of practice, his ballet was amazing!

As good as the cast and story is, the movie itself fell short of being good/great. The performance of chi was honest and truthful. However, the cinematography felt somewhat cheap. The screenwriting also fell short for me. I guess to me the movie's message basically promoted capitalism vs communism. One of the hard parts for me was how we skimmed through his childhood going straight to his time in america pretty quickly. The parents are never developed to any significant extent even when they arrive to America for the first time. All the same, the story is truly great and inspiring but the movie could have been done better.

One of the the best movies I have seen in years. Beautiful, masterful. For anyone who has a concern about this being a "dance movie" it is not. Whether or not you enjoy ballet has little bearing on the high level of enjoyment you will derive from this film.

I really loved the movie as it shows courage, confidence and bravery throughout the male dancer. Dancing is a wonderful way of getting confidence and joyfulness. Yes ballet is difficult. More difficult than other dances. I found one scene in which he trys to do a flexibility test with his legs and the teacher calls him a pighead for no reason just because he's not strong enough. To me that was tense. Toward the end, he says "Don't ever call me a pighead again. I'm not a pighead." This movie was really emotional and very well done with the acting and the dancing. It deserves a big 10 out of 10.

One word: beautiful. This movie has so much beauty, in the story, in the directing, in the cinematography, in the acting. This was a masterpiece and completely deserves a 10/10 on my scale, without hesitation. I highly recommend seeing this movie in theaters to fully experience it as well as to encourage this little known movie. Bruce Greenwood delivers an absolute knockout performance. I've always loved him as an actor, both as the good guy (13 Days) and the bad guy (Double Jeopardy) But this is a Bruce Greenwood I had never seen before, a phenomenal tour de force. If you love true stories that touch the heart, go see it now. If you love historical dramas, go see it now. If you love artistic movies, go see it now. If you love movies that are storyline and character driven as opposed to budget and star-power driven, go see it now.

Wonderful and tear-bringing. However, clearly embellished "true story" with the rags to riches and happy ending. An absolute must for the lovers of ballet.

Wow. Terrific, terrific movie. Entertaining from start to finish. I love how they don't even bother to subtitle the small talk, that's a nice touch. I think the scene in the Chinese consulate has to be one of the most stressful movie sequences I've seen in recent history. Great, great movie. Tearjerker too.

This is not a genre I would normally see. The reviews were so compelling I checked it out. I am pleased to confirm all that has been said and then some. It remided me somewhat of the Ray Charles Biography. You have a brilliant entertainer who is realistically shown i.e. warts and all. Both stories are thoroughly engaing and unpredictable. I highly recommend this, even to those put off by this genre.

It's a very nice movie, even you know nothing about dance. The way the Chinese male dancer chase his love and his goal of freedom is very touching. A must see.

The fim is focusing on the personnality of the main actor-dancer, Chi Cao. And this personnality is really amazing. He is a prodigious dancer, shows a personality both strong and modest. Thanks to him, it emanates fomr the film an aura of courage, determenition. WE go of it, feeling extremely good about ourselves, and the world. Thank you Chi Cao.

I have no excuse for not giving this amazing movie a 10. Based on a true story, it begins with flashbacks from the past and reaches a climax in the present (1981) The director has skillfully and smoothly developed the sequence of events in the dancer's life, at times with a touch of humour... definitely one of the best movies I've seen lately.
