This Beatrix Potter biopic is told with a mostly light touch, although it reveals that her life was at times cruelly tragic. The film's whimsical style and use of animation successfully convey the author's childlike personality and rich imagination. She was ahead of her times in so many ways: proto-feminist, artist, career woman of independent financial means, nature conservationist. The film is breathtakingly beautiful to watch, with its gorgeous country scenery and luxurious city shots. Ewan McGregor and Renee Zellweger maintain the easy chemistry they established in Down with Love. Potter's many fans will be particularly charmed and fascinated by the movie.
